Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is suing the company behind the CrushAI app that can create fake, non-consensual nude images.

Meta said in a release that it removes ads, Facebook pages and Instagram accounts dedicated to CrushAI and similar “nudify” apps that create the explicit images, which are banned on Meta platforms.

Search terms including “delete clothing” and “nudify” are also restricted.

CrushAI is controlled by Hong Kong-based Joy Timeline HK Limited, and Meta said it has filed a suit in Hong Kong against Joy Timeline HK Limited to get them to stop advertising their app on Meta platforms.

Meta accused Joy Timeline HK Limited of repeatedly circumventing the Meta ad review process even after previous ads for CrushAI were removed.

Joy Timeline HK Limited did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The “nudify” apps are still available on app stores due to discrepancies between how they are advertised on those stores and how they are advertised on social media.

“The problem with apps is that they have this dual-use front where they present on the app store as a fun way to face swap, but then they are marketing on Meta as their primary purpose being nudification. So when these apps come up for review on the Apple or Google store, they don’t necessarily have the wherewithal to ban them,” Cornell University researcher Alexios Mantzarlis told CBS News.

Mr. Mantzarlis told the BBC that he was happy Meta has taken action, but that “even as it was making this announcement, I was able to find a dozen ads by CrushAI live on the platform and a hundred more from other ’nudifiers.’”
